The Most Important Thing To Do Right Now - Build Your Personal Brand#personal-branding by June 29, 2016
Suppose you are an expert in widget design. That’s the best thing you do. If someone asked around for a widget design expert would your name come up as a suggestion? It probably won’t unless you have worked at letting people know that you are an expert widget designer. It takes time to build a reputation, especially with so many people vying for attention. Having a personal brand is important for when you are searching for that new opportunity. In today’s workforce economy the need to search for a new opportunity is not always by choice and can be sudden. A brand can’t be built overnight. You have to work at it. You should start now!!
Building your brand is important and certainly takes a time commitment, but you need to have it banked for when you need it. Banking is the perfect term for building your brand. Hopefully, you have thought through your financial safety net and put effort towards ensuring you can cover those moments in life when you need funds. You have put money into a savings account and contributed to a 401k. Those items have probably been put on autopilot with having to think about them anymore. You need to do the same thing with your personal brand.
You need to set aside time in your week to brand yourself. Put it on your calendar if you need to remind yourself. It is an activity that is every bit as important as that presentation your boss is asking you to redo for the tenth time. If you don’t set aside the time to work on yourself, that time will be consumed by other activities far less important for your personal well-being. One of the best ways to do this at the onset is to calendar it. Really. That may seem over the top, but it ensures that you do it. We are creatures of habit. By putting it on your calendar as a repeating event, you will get into the habit of taking the time to work on it. If you feel crunched for time right now, make the invite to yourself for only 15 minutes. Take that time and work on your brand. As time goes on and things free up, add more days per week for that 15 minutes. You should really work on your brand about 3-5 times per week. There are articles on how to build your personal brand that can help. Follow those guidelines. Building a great brand takes time but there are tricks to get there quicker.
It doesn’t matter what you do, but do it now. Work on your LinkedIn profile. Share relevant articles with your professional social network aligned with your skills and experience. Do this often. Whatever the activity you choose to do to work towards crafting your message, don’t procrastinate any more. Start working on it this week, because you never know when you are going to have to rely on your brand to move into that next job opportunity.
